Often old photos have small creases and tears around the edges. Scene Description: From this hill 1 kilometer directly north of the city the Germans made their most vigorous resistance. Picture made showing view of Grandpre and the entire valley as seen by the German machine gunners dug in at this point. The Americans took this hill after three unsuccessful attempts. While this was the most important machine-gun location, the entire hill strong point was dotted with the pits which protected the gunners, and with brush camouflage. They were able to command the entire valley with guns in place. In this picture the brush screen is removed so as to show the town, the swamp, and low ground in the middle distance, and the hills in the distance which are partly obscured by the fog which prevails in this sector at this season.
