Product Condition Description:Excellent. Has been stored away from light and heat for the 41 years since my late sister met Haring at this exhibit (and others) and Haring signed it with a whimsical drawing. Never displayed. Signed BOLDLY IN INK on reverse of show poster by Haring in 1982 with a Haring drawing of BARKING DOG CHASING MAN. Stored in non-smoking home since 1982. PROVENANCE: See the 3 images at end of photos. These include a photo and color slide image of Haring taken by my late sister when she met Haring at many shows in the 1980s, both in NYC and Connecticut (Hartford Atheneum). NOTE: The IMAGE OF HARING WITH a DEDICATION TO MY SISTER ON inside PINK COVER, AND IMAGE OF SLIDE OF HARING AT THE “INTO 84” EXHIBIT ARE NOT BEING SOLD WITH THE POSTER IN THIS LISTING. THESE 3 images showing Haring are included as provenance of a sort, to show my sister Shelley met Haring at his shows on many occasions. My sister Shelley had this signed show poster in her possession from 1982 until her passing in 1998

I have access to a photo CD of about 40 images (not for sale) taken by my sister at Haring shows including a photo of Haring posing for my sister. A link to a batch of Haring or images from his shows displaying how items were staged will be made available at no cost to the buyer of this item.

This very rare poster with Haring’s ORIGINAL SIGNATURE AND DRAWINGS is from the estate of my late sister Shelley who was herself an aspiring “outsider” artist and attended countless art exhibits in New York and New England during the 1980s.The authenticity of this poster and drawing is absolutely guaranteed. This listing poster was found among a large group of original Haring show promotional posters, portfolios (“Fertility Suite”) post cards, pins, and other objects from various Haring and other New York art scene artist exhibits in liquidating the estate of my late sister. All items were carefully stored away from light and heat, after being purchased at Haring’s shows in the 1980s, and never touched again until they were found after my sister’s passing decades later. Condition: Excellent. Never framed. This 1982 Keith Haring exhibition poster is in remarkable condition. It has been rolled and in storage since the show. This poster was published to announce Haring’s first show at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in the fall of 1982 (Oct. 9 – Nov. 13). The poster measures 18″ X 24″.

The white on black design mimics the look of Haring’s subway posters of the time and features his trademark images: crawling babies, barking dog-people and stick figures. Haring experimented with performance, video, installation and collage, while always maintaining a strong commitment to drawing. In 1980, Haring found a highly effective medium that allowed him to communicate with the wider audience he desired, when he noticed the unused advertising panels covered with matte black paper in a subway station. He began to create drawings in white chalk upon these blank paper panels throughout the subway system. Between 1980 and 1985, the subway became, as Haring said, a laboratory for working out his ideas and experimenting with his simple lines.

Encyclopedia Link: Keith Haring (May 4, 1958 – February 16, 1990) was an artist and social activist whose work responded to the New York City street culture of the 1980s. By expressing concepts of birth, death, sex and war, Haring’s imagery has become a widely recognized visual language of the 20th century. Haring achieved his first public attention with chalk drawings in the subways of New York. These were his first recognized pieces of pop art. The exhibitions were filmed by the photographer Tseng Kwong Chi. Around this time, “The Radiant Baby” became his symbol. His bold lines, vivid colors, and active figures carry strong messages of life and unity. In 1981 he sketched his first chalk drawings on black paper and painted plastic, metal and found objects.

By 1982, Haring established friendships with fellow emerging artists Futura 2000, Kenny Scharf, Madonna and Jean-Michel Basquiat. I have several Kenny Scharf show posters which will be listed on eBay soon.
