Summerlee is in Fayette Co WV. It was one of the 15 or 16 mines operated by the New River Coal Co. Each mine and corresponding town had its own number assigned to it, in this case the letter ‘6″. This makes these tokens fun to collect. And they are all readily available on eBay. Coal Miners were paid with tokens – known as Scrip in lieu of wages. These were then spent in the Company store. · The thing to keep in mind is that most coal mines were often in very rural Sometimes United States money was not always available. The company could advance money to miners using Scrip. In a basic sense it was a form of Credit. The majority of Scrip was paper, however many companies chose metal tokens. The system of paying workers in Scrip is long gone but the tokens remain behind. It has become a fascinating collector’s hobby. Donald Edkins spent his lifetime cataloging coal scrip. He created a road map for the collection of Coal Scrip. It is known as the EDKINS CATALOUGE OF U.S. COAL COMPANY SCRIP consisting of two volumes and now in its Fourth edition. With the advent of Unions, it was in the 1950’s that the Scrip system was no longer used. Some companies destroyed their Tokens, while others stored them away. I’ve heard of some throwing their tokens into lakes and rivers – even covering them with concrete! In this hobby, rarity becomes a factor in determining value. I have been a token collector for a while now and stuff is starting to pile up around here…. I am just getting started selling many extra tokens I’ve collected. It is like the old Christmas Classic ” Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer” with his island of misfit toys. Perhaps you’ve seen it. These are tokens looking for a new home!
