Springfield Armory Sword Bayonet ONLY (With YPRES marking!) Manufacturer: S.A., Springfield Armory Model: M1905 Blade Length: 12.00″ Serial #: 712290 TEXT GOES HERETEXT GOES HERE –> Offered here is a WWI M1903 bolt action rifle (and WWII M1 Garand self loading rifle) M1905 Springfield Armory sword bayonet. Scabbard is NOT included. This one is missing approximately 3.5″ of the tip. We are not sure if it was broken, or if someone started to cut it and make is a shorter bayonet? President Roosevelt rejected the M1892 bayonet because it was thought of as being too short for the M1903 rifle. The M1905 was a longer version and it also incorporated a mechanism for locking the bayonet to the scabbard. It also was designed with a screw to hold on the grips instead of rivets. Two manufacturers manufactured the bayonet – Rock Island Arsenal and Springfield Armory. Approximately 1.5 – 1.6 million were produced from 1906-1922. A second round was made during WWII. Overall, this bayonet is in Fair – Good condition, considering its age and history. Even with the broken tip, it is still a functional bayonet and could be trimmed into a knife shape. Or, it could be used for display purposes. The press catch is functional with very stiff spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They have light scrapes and oxidation. The metal has started to turn a darker plum patina color. The one (1x) escutcheon screw securely fastens the grip panels. However, interestingly it also has two rivets securing it in place. There is a small crack down the center so maybe the rivets are a repair job? The screw has oxidized and there appears to be no tool marks but it has oxidized. The grips have chips, compressions and cracks. Both panels have tooling, see markings below. The wood finish has darkened with age. The spine, sides and fullers have oxidation and discoloration. There are no nicks or dings on the blade and it has appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is NOT intact, approximately 3.5″ is missing. The remaining finish has turned to a dark plum patina color. The left ricasso is marked “S.A.” / 1917″ with a flaming bomb in between. The right ricasso is marked “US” over the serial number “712290”. Interestingly, there is custom tooling on the two grip panels. We are not sure if it was done during WWI by the soldier, or if it was done later after the war. The right side grip has been center punched “YPRES” and the left side grip has been center punched – hard to read but looks like “1917”. Historically speaking, the third battle of Ypres was July 31-November 10, 1917. So this could be from the battle, but we have no documentation to back it up. Regardless, this is a cool piece of history. Scabbard is NOT included. This bayonet will be a great project, addition to your WWI rifle, or a bayonet collection in general.
